Precious to my soul is Your Word, O LORD!
It is my life, my sustenance, and my light.
My soul once groped hopelessly in darkness,
Wallowing in the cesspool of my iniquity.
Ash was my portion—lies and emptiness;
In Your holy Word my heart had no delight—
Dead and vile, I was a captive of the night.
You rescued me, O Gracious One, by Your glorious might,
And enabled me to behold its sublimity;
You stirred in me a deep hunger for its sweetness.
I have tasted and seen its unrivaled goodness.
Life is my portion forever, and joy in its fullness!
Precious to my soul is Your Word, O LORD!
By Your Word, O God, You populated the void.
When You, O Holy One, send forth Your Word,
It does not return empty but does Your pleasure.
Who, O LORD, can resist Your stupendous power?
It is sharper than any two-edged sword,
Mighty and holy—by it You put off strife
And to our dead souls give eternal life;
You break in pieces the tongues that devour
And swiftly destroy the wisdom of the wise.
They are utterly consumed, they and their lies.
But to Your faithful You give lasting joy.
O LORD God, Your Wisdom endures forever!
It is strength, peace, and comfort altogether—
The well-spring of hope, my soul’s enlightener.
To You, O gracious Father, be praise and honor!
You shone forth Your light and ended my stupor;
You fed me with the Bread of life—the only Treasure.
To prosperity, O God, You led out a prisoner.
Precious to my soul is Your Word, O LORD!
My lips, O God, will ever proclaim Your glory!
I will thank You forever, for Your Word is holy.
Rest and exuberant joy are in Your right hand.
Your wondrous deeds are proclaimed in the land.
Let no lie abide in me, O God my Redeemer;
Increase my hunger and thirst for Your holy decree.
May my heart ever delight and be satisfied in Thee,
And in humble obedience declare Your beauty;
For pure is Your Word and good Your command!
To Your praise, righteousness shall reign without end.
Your glorious counsel, O Holy One, forever stands!
Come, O ye faithful, let your heart exult!
Give thanks to our God, and His name exalt!
Sing to the LORD, for He has come in His radiance;
In His grace, He has granted our souls sustenance.
By it we are taught, rebuked, and corrected;
By it we are trained and wondrously perfected.
In Your Wisdom, O LORD, is my soul comforted;
All my springs are in the light of Your countenance.
It uncovers sins and shatters pride and self-reliance;
It reveals Your glory, O Lord, and silences the boastful.
For truth is Your holy Word and uniquely powerful.
Precious to my soul is Your Word, O LORD!
Your gracious gift, O blessed Spirit—Your glorious sword.
It brings lasting light wherever rules the night,
Makes wise the fool, instructs him who lacks insight,
Brings down the strong, and upholds those without might.
Your Word, O Lord, is eternal and holy.
It is the light that enlightens the lowly,
The great sword that slays the haughty,
The mighty rock that crushes the ungodly.
It vividly paints man’s inward depravity,
With perfect clarity, uncovers his vileness.
It is the mirror that exposes our rottenness,
The refiner that purifies him who is defiled,
The judge of all whose souls are by lies beguiled.
Majestic and mighty is Your Word, O LORD!
It is the Light and the Truth; there is no other.
Darkness cannot overcome its brightness,
No lie can triumph over its mightiness.
Your Word is victorious and stands forever!
